Jimmy Creighton

Varsity Head Coach

Coach Creighton will be entering his 4th season as head coach of the Howard boys’ lacrosse program. He is a physical education teacher at Howard. In his first three seasons the Lions have gone 41-13. Howard has had 19 players named to the All-County team in his three years at the helm. In 2013, Howard won the 4A/3A regional championship. Creighton was named Howard County Coach of the Year following the 2013 season as the Lions went 16-3. He also coaches football at Howard.

Prior to coaching at Howard H.S., Coach Creighton was teaching and coaching in Long Island, NY for his high school alma mater, Huntington. He coached there for three years (2007-2010) before moving to Maryland. He also coached football and basketball at Huntington.

Before working at Huntington H.S., Creighton was an assistant coach for his college alma mater, Salisbury University with the men’s lacrosse team for the 2007 season. The team won the Division III National Championship in 2007 with a perfect 23-0 record. His responsibilities included assisting with the offense, conditioning and recruiting. Creighton played on the men’s lacrosse team at Salisbury University from 2003-2006 as a midfielder. He had the opportunity to play for the all-time winningest coach in NCAA men’s lacrosse history in Jim Berkman. He was a part of three National Championship teams (2003-2005) and one National Championship finalist (2006). During his playing years at Salisbury the team compiled a record of 79-2 and never lost a conference game. He was named team captain his senior year (2006) by his teammates and coaches.

Following the 2006 season, he was named a member of the USILA Honorable Mention All-American team and a USILA North-South Senior All-Star. In addition, he was named a Scholar All-American for his work in the classroom. He also received All-Conference honors in 2006.

Creighton earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 2006 and his Master’s in Education in 2007 at Salisbury University.

2011: 12-5 (Regional Finalist)

2012: 13-5 (Regional Finalist)

2013: 16-3 (Regional Champion, State Final Four, Most Wins in Program History)

 

Mike Kaplan

Varsity Assistant Coach

Coach Kaplan is in his 11th year coaching in Howard County. This is his fourth year coaching at Howard High School. Currently, he is the Varsity Defensive Coordinator. Coach Kaplan also assists in running the Iron Lions after school strength and conditioning program. Prior to coaching at Howard High School, he spent 3 years as an assistant coach and the Director of Lacrosse Operations at Howard Community College. His primary focus was with the goalies and defense; coaching several All-Region defenseman and one All-American defenseman. He also coached back-to-back All-Region goalies. He spent 4 years coaching for the Chesapeake Rock Lacrosse Club with the U18 premier team. Currently he coaches a U11 team for the Chesapeake Rock. He has coaching experience with Howard County Lacrosse Program at both the youth recreation level as well as the Cobra travel level. As a collegiate player, he won an NCLL National Championship with the Towson University Club Lacrosse team. Before that he was a member of the Howard Community College lacrosse team. Mike is a member of the IMLCA (Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association), US Lacrosse, an American Sports Education Program certified coach, and also a Howard High School alum.

Shea Conway

Varsity Assistant Coach

Coach Conway played at Glenelg high then played at Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA.  While there Shea started on Attack for 2 seasons.  After graduation Conway was an Assistant Coach for the Varsity Boy's team at Howard.  The following season, in 2011, he was an Assistant Coach on the Varsity team at Glenelg high school.  Conway also coached a Howard County Club Lacrosse team in the summer of 2010 and for numerous years was involved in Hero's Summer Lacrosse.

Matt Hanson

Junior Varsity Head Coach

Coach Hanson is looking to build on his experience as the boys JV head coach. Last season as head coach, the team compiled a 14-0 record. Prior to coaching at Howard, Coach Hanson played for River Hill and York College in Pennsylvania. At River Hill, he was a captain for 3 years in the lacrosse program and currently sits 3rd on the all time saves list. At York, he was named captain during his sophomore and junior years. During his sophomore season, he was named defensive MVP. After his collegiate career, Coach Hanson had a 1 year stint with the River HIll program working with the defense and goalies.

Craig Calton

Junior Varsity Assistant Coach

Coach Calton is in his 13th year coaching at Howard High School. Calton who is a Howard Alum earned 4 varsity lacrosse letters, and was the 1996 MVP. He was lucky to play under the legendary coach Dan Ross for his freshman and sophomore year.

Calton played club lacrosse at James Madison University where the team was consistently nationally ranked in the top 10. Returning home, Calton became the JV Head Lacrosse Coach in 2002 under the tutelage of varsity coaches Wendell Thomas and Lee Corrigan. He also coached the Varsity Defense for a number of years. In 2007 Calton became the Varsity Assistant Coach for the girls lacrosse program, and in 2008-2010, he served as the Girls Varsity Head Coach. In 2011 Calton returned to the boys program to assist Coach Hanson with the Junior Varsity program.
